Executive Board 2013 - 2014

Co-Presidents

Trini Thach is a senior Psychology and Biology double major. She stumbled upon GlobeMed during Fall Fest freshman year and has been hooked ever since. Trini interned with our partner Health Alert - Uganda during the summer of 2013 and served as ghU chair the following school year. She has also traveled to Evanston to attend GROW training and the 2013 GlobeMed Summit -- both of which reinforced her passion for the GlobeMed mission and her belief in our ever-expanding network. With every year, she gets more and more excited about this organization, its mission, and its capacity to engage and train future leaders in the field of global health. Trini is looking forward to another productive and collaborative year, and is especially excited to be working with our new executive board!

Kaitlin Quallen is a senior Biology and Global Studies double major.  She discovered GlobeMed at Fall Fest her freshman year and fell in love with everything about the organization. She has been involved in the community building and ghU committees and served as finance chair during the first semester of her junior year.  Being involved in GlobeMed has changed the way she thinks about public health and inspired her passion for global public health.  Since joining GlobeMed she has worked on a sanitation project in rural Peru and conducted public health research in Chile.  Participating in both of these activites has strengthened her interest in public health as well as her belief in GlobeMed's partnership model as means to create sustainable change.  Now back in the USA, Kaitlin can't wait to return to UNC and is psyched for the upcoming year with GlobeMed!!

Campaigns Co-Chairs

Anderson Phillips is a senior majoring in History and minoring in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE). After hearing Trini Thach express her love for the organization on countless occasions, he joined GlobeMed his junior year to see what all the fuss was about. He was not disappointed. Anderson spent last year on the Campaigns committee, and is incredibly excited to serve as a Campaigns Coordinator during this, his last hurrah at UNC. Although he was a relative latecomer to the GlobeMed party, he feels very lucky to have been part of such an awesome organization. After graduating, Anderson plans to attend law school. Somewhere. Hopefully somewhere nice, but definitely somewhere. He'll let you know.

Yum Phan is a senior studying psychology and global studies with a concentration on global health and environment. She joined GlobeMed her junior year and immediately fell in love with everything GlobeMed from the mission of the organization to the passionate and driven members. She was  part of the Campaigns Committe last year and this year she will serve as the Campaigns Co-Chair. Yum loves mornings, coffee/tea dates, going on walks, doing crafts, and ice cream and brownies. She is super excited to lead this year and can't wait to work as a team to accomplish our goals!

Global Health University Co-Chairs

Paula Dey is a junior majoring in Biology and minoring in Chemistry. She has been involved with GlobeMed at UNC since the beginning of her sophomore year. This is her second year being part of ghU, and she is very excited to be able to spread awareness about global health issues, HAU, and anything else this upcoming year brings! She loves photography, swimming, reading, and good food. After graduation she plans on entering a Cell and Molecular Biology graduate program.

Sarah Heywood is a sophomore Asian Studies and Global Studies double major with a focus in Global Health in Asia and a minor in Chemistry. She joined GlobeMed her freshman year as a member of GHU, and is so excited to head up the committee this year alongside her co-chair. This year, she hopes to increase campus and community-wide awareness of global health issues through outreach events. Although Sarah has always been interested in public health, GlobeMed has definitely strengthened that interest through its dedication to social justice, leadership, and global health equity. This past summer, she traveled to Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand with UNC SEAS, and she hopes to study in China next year. After graduation, she plans on attending medical school with the end goal of working in a rural health clinic in China. Besides GlobeMed, she is very involved in UNC Men’s Crew and the UNC Loreleis. Sarah is looking forward to another great year with GlobeMed and attending the Leadership Institute at Northwestern!

GROW Coordinator

Josh Bradley is a junior studying English and Geography. He joined GlobeMed his freshman year on the community building board. Josh worked in Gulu, Uganda with the GROW team this past summer and is now the GROW Coordinator. Josh's other interests include reading, longboarding, sports, food, the gym, writing, working at the Carolina Quarterly, and playing guitar. After graduation, Josh plans on applying to a graduate geography program at UNC and/or working abroad.

Individual Giving Chair

Gihani Dissanayake is a junior Chemistry major with a minor in Global Health from Duke. She joined GlobeMed through the recommendation of GlobeMed at UNC's chapter founder in the middle of freshman year. She loves Global Health and is excited to serve as the Chair of Individual
Giving this year. She believes that the cornerstone of positive change is partnership and is proud to be a part of an organization that believes in the same idea.

Community Building Chair

Mia Lei is a sophomore Biology and Health Policy and Management double major with a minor chemistry. Mia joined GlobeMed at the beginning of her first year after seeing them in the pit post-Fall Fest cancellation, and has been hooked ever since. Her first semester was spent on Community Building, and spent her second semester of her first year on Individual Giving when additional members were needed. GlobeMed has completely changed Mia’s views of social justice, and definitely sparked her interest in public health.  She loves seeing live music, eating dessert, meeting new people, and travelling. Mia is extremely excited for the upcoming year to start and meet all of the new members!

Communications Chair

Yasemin Cole is a sophomore Biology major minoring in Medical Anthropology. She has been involved in GlobeMed since her freshman year, serving as the Director of Finances during the spring semester and was a member of ghU during the fall semester. The dedicated GlobeMed community inspires her to make a difference and has expanded her love for GlobeMed and health as a human right. Yasemin is excited for a great year serving as Communications Chair and spreading the word about GlobeMed events. She is excited to see new faces and can’t wait to start the year strong. Yasemin conducted research at NIEHS last summer and plans to go on study abroad this summer. She loves playing tennis, biking, and swimming. She also loves cats, Turkey, dolma (a Turkish dish), and has a twin brother attending NCSU. After graduating Yasemin plans to either go to Medical school or get a phD in molecular biology.

Finance Chair

Julia Baker is a sophomore photojournalism major who joined GlobeMed in the Fall 2012 because the organization aligned with her understanding of how students can create a positive impact in global health inequities. GlobeMed has given her the chance to pursue her interest in public health as a GROW intern in Gulu when she was able to work with our partner, Health Alert – Uganda. As a past intern, she understands how important it is for a non-profit organization to receive money in a timely and effective manner from donors like GlobeMed. Because of this, she is ready for the job that lies ahead of her as Financial Chair!

Secretary

Clara Williams is a sophomore biology major with a double minor in chemistry and anthropology. She joined GlobeMed her freshman year, getting involved in the Global Health U committee. After dozens of meetings, HIV testing events, pit sitting sessions, and six weeks of working with Health Alert Uganda through the GlobeMed GROW internship, she is delighted to be spending her next year in the organization serving as secretary. Following graduation, she plans on attending medical school, or else working further with NGOs abroad.
