Local Partnership

In recognition of the fact that health disparities exist locally in addition to abroad, GlobeMed at UNC is also partnered with UNC's Center for AIDS Research (CFAR).  GlobeMed members have participated in local service projects in conjunction with CFAR. This year the chapter is teaming up with CFAR to plan an alternative winter break; during which UNC students will have the opportunity to learn about HIV/AIDS and health disparities that exisit in North Carolina and the U.S. as a whole.  The alternative winter break is being funded and supported by the UNC service-learning program, APPLES.

GlobeMed at UNC is also a recognized organization under UNC's Gillings School of Public Health.

ABOUT US

Mission Statement

GlobeMed aims to strengthen the movement for global health equity by empowering students and communities to work together to improve the health of people living in poverty around the world.

GlobeMed Network

GlobeMed was founded by a group of students at Northwestern Univeristy in 2007.  Our network now consists of 50 university based chapters, each of which is partnered with a grassroots health organization.  Throughout the school year, each chapter works to raise funds for their partner and to educate chapter members as well as their local community about pressing global health issues. Chapters also maintain constant contact with their partner organization. Grassroots Onsite Work (GROW) internships strengthen the relationship between chapter members and foreign partners.  Each summer, students spend approximately 7 weeks interning at our partner organization.

Our Partner: Health Alert-Uganda

Health Alert-Uganda (HAU) was founded in 2004 by Francis Obutu, who recognized a need for community-based care and support for HIV positive children living in the Gulu District of northern Uganda. HAU operates as a service communications NGO that works to promote the rights and well-being of children infected with and affected by HIV/AIDS in the community.

Mission: Health Alert Uganda is committed to increasing access to quality community based care and support services for children between the ages of 0-17 infected and affected with HIV/AIDS in Uganda. This is achieved through promotion of rights and child’s participation in home based care, capacity building, community mobilization, advocacy, and research.
